Chapter 214: You are pecuilar
Chapter 214: You are pecuilar
Kyle soon realized why Amanda had told him not to get awkward when he heard about her early days in the corps.
"You... just read files for a whole month?" Kyle asked, staring at her in disbelief. "Just read?"
Amanda nodded.
"My first experience near a rift was almost two months after I joined. And even then, it was only a fourth-grade rift, which I cleared alongside Ethan and Hannah."
"..."
Layena was the next to speak.
"My first rift experience came two weeks after I joined the corps. It was a fourth-grade rift too, but I wasn’t even allowed to participate. I was told to stay on the sidelines, observe, and write down anything I found noteworthy."
"..."
This was madness.
"Aren’t I, like... on some kind of fast track in the world of Nightwalkers?" Kyle asked with a wry smile. "Three days and three rifts."
Layena nodded.
"You’re probably the only Nightwalker in history who fought a ghoul on his very first official day of work."
Amanda agreed.
"Even Brother Blake, if I heard correctly, was only assigned to hunt a Majin on his third day during his training period with the corps."
"Wait, Blake worked for PSC?" Kyle asked, surprised.
"Yes. He worked there for a month to gain experience and familiarize himself with field regulations," Layena said. "That’s one of the reasons I respect him."
Amanda hummed in agreement.
"Most Petalled Clans consider working for the government beneath them. They see it as a stain on their honor. Brother Blake was different in that regard."
Kyle nodded appreciatively.
Then he crossed his arms and asked, "What about the academy? How was it for you two? You were in the same batch, right?"
Layena and Amanda exchanged a glance.
"I barely spoke to her," Amanda said bluntly. "Layena always kept to herself. She seemed determined to stay isolated from everyone."
Layena blinked, caught off guard by the direct jab.
"That’s not exactly fair," she replied. "I was aware of what people thought of me because I was part of Klaus. And you were the heiress of Maylith. You were practically a celebrity back then. Can you imagine how much gossip there would’ve been if we started hanging around together?"
Amanda narrowed her eyes.
"Do you really think I give a damn about that?"
Then she let out a sigh.
"Though you’re right about one thing. The academy was full of hierarchy nonsense."
"Politics?" Kyle asked. "Does where you come from really matter that much?"
"It wasn’t encouraged by the school’s rules," Amanda explained, "but teenagers love their little superiority games. And there are always people eager to stand in the shadow of authority, offering their loyalty to whoever happens to be powerful."
Kyle smiled wryly.
"Sounds like one of those cliché young master setups. Would I be considered one too?"
Layena nodded.
"Yes. The Astortia family is one of the highest-ranking clans in Guhang."
Amanda’s expression grew troubled.
"However, Kyle... there’s something you should know."
Her voice carried a hint of hesitation.
"I may not be the best person to tell you this, but the Astortia family is barely holding on to its place among the Ten Petals. Because of that, there’s a good chance people from lower-ranked clans will try to challenge you."
Kyle was genuinely surprised to hear about his clan’s situation.
As for Amanda’s concern, however, he couldn’t help but chuckle.
"You’re worrying over nothing, Amanda. I’ve dealt with bullies since I was a kid. Those people would just be a bunch of snorty brats pretending to be important."
Amanda visibly relaxed after hearing his answer.
Layena, however, was caught off guard by how casually Kyle had brushed aside his family’s standing.
After a brief hesitation, she spoke in a quieter voice.
"Kyle... do you not like your family?"
Her question immediately drew Amanda’s attention as well.
Kyle blinked in surprise.
"I mean..." Layena continued carefully. "Back then, you seemed upset about meeting your parents tomorrow."
Realizing what she was referring to, Kyle let out a small sigh.
"Layena, my family is my brother. That’s it."
His voice was calm, but here certainity
"Other than him, I don’t even consider myself part of the Astortia family."
Silence followed.
Layena lowered her gaze, her suspicions now all but confirmed. Whatever relationship Kyle had with the rest of his family, it clearly wasn’t a good one.
Amanda also fell silent.
Part of her wondered whether Kyle should be sharing something so personal with Layena. Yet after a moment’s thought, she decided against interfering.
If Kyle was willing to say it himself, then it wasn’t her place to step between them.
After a brief pause, Kyle pushed himself away from the railing.
"Well, let’s head downstairs."
They had already spent more than half an hour up here. Staying any longer would only put Layena in an awkward position.
Amanda and Layena nodded and followed him toward the stairs.
The moment Kyle stepped forward, the nauseating odor struck him again.
This time, it was even stronger.
He frowned and came to a stop.
Amanda immediately noticed.
"Is it happening again?" she asked, concern creeping into her voice.
Kyle nodded.
"It is. Honestly, I’m surprised neither of you can smell it."
He turned his head toward the left, following the direction from which the stench seemed to be coming.
Then he took a slow breath.
Better to satisfy his curiosity now than spend the rest of the night wondering about it.
Activating God’s Eye, he focused his senses.
Instantly, his vision sharpened. The world around him seemed to gain a new layer of clarity.
Fortunately, he was facing away from Amanda and Layena, so neither of them noticed the subtle change in his eyes.
Kyle directed his gaze toward the wall.
His enhanced vision pierced through the concrete surface.
As expected, there was something beyond it.
’A room...’
The wall wasn’t backed by solid concrete at all.
Hidden behind it was a vast chamber.
And when he looked at what they were hiding inside the vault...
’This is madness.’
