Chapter 110 Sun Wukong Battles the Long-Armed Ape; Heavenly Rescue Arrives
Earth-shattering!
The Two Realms Mountain collapsed, and Sun Wukong escaped!
Tang Sanzang was both surprised and delighted to see Sun Wukong's abilities.
He knew that this journey to the west would be fraught with difficulties.
If Sun Wukong were his disciple, he would naturally be able to protect him on his journey to the West.
The only thing that made Tang Sanzang hesitate was that Sun Wukong had committed a terrible crime in the past, and even now, he still seemed untamed and wild.
They still need constant guidance to prevent them from making serious mistakes.
The story goes that Tang Sanzang rescued Wukong, and the two traveled west together, when they suddenly encountered a fierce tiger.
Tang Sanzang was terrified, but Sun Wukong was overjoyed and said with a smile, "Master, don't be afraid. This beast has brought us clothes."
After saying this, Sun Wukong used a few tricks and killed the tiger.
The two continued westward and found a farmhouse to stay in, where they also borrowed needles and thread.
Tang Sanzang quickly made a tiger-skin skirt for Sun Wukong.
Their westward journey was thus somewhat fixed.
Several days later, the two encountered several bandits.
Sun Wukong possessed extraordinary abilities and easily killed the bandits.
This filled Tang Sanzang with dread.
He was a good man who had cultivated himself for ten lifetimes and also practiced vegetarianism and chanted Buddhist scriptures, so he could not bear to see such bloodshed.
In addition, Sun Wukong's abilities are truly great, and Tang Sanzang probably cannot control him.
Therefore, he became truly angry.
He wanted Sun Wukong to know that he was in charge of this journey to the West.
Sun Wukong is just a disciple; he must never do anything against his own will again.
Therefore, the Tang Dynasty monk said a few more words.
Sun Wukong, with his temperamental nature, couldn't stand these things and immediately retorted.
The two parted on bad terms.
Then, Guanyin Bodhisattva disguised herself as an old mother, gave Tang Sanzang the headband, and bestowed upon him a spell.
Tang Sanzang tricked Sun Wukong into wearing the headband and immediately recited the headband-tightening incantation.
The tight band pierced his flesh and took root, causing Sun Wukong to writhe on the ground in pain and beg for mercy repeatedly.
Thus, Tang Sanzang finally established his position on the journey to the West.
The two continued their journey westward.
As they reached a mountain ridge, a sudden gust of wind arose.
Tang Sanzang was startled and hid behind Sun Wukong, saying, "Disciple, what's going on? Is there a monster?"
'
Wukong shielded Tang Sanzang behind him and opened his fiery eyes to take a closer look.
The wind came strangely, carrying sand and stones, and breaking trees.
It was neither like the usual mountain wind, nor the wind that could bewitch people.
He steadied himself with a hand seal and shouted sharply, "Master, don't panic! This wind is strange and ominous; some kind of demon must be causing trouble here!"
Before the words were finished, the gale suddenly subsided, the clouds in the sky churned, and a figure descended.
A figure resembling an ape stood on a blue stone.
He was sixteen feet tall, with broad shoulders and a thick waist.
He wore a purple-gold crown and chainmail.
Holding a bronze staff, his eyes were wide open, gleaming with a fierce light.
It was the Long-Armed Ape, one of the Four Mischievous Monkeys under Xu Xian's command on Mount Buzhou.
The Tongbi Ape was a divine monkey of the same level as the Lingming Stone Monkey.
It can grasp the sun and moon, shrink a thousand mountains, discern good and bad fortune, and manipulate the universe.
The gibbon under Mount Buzhou was kind-hearted by nature, but unfortunately it witnessed the true face of the Western Spirit Mountain.
The temple was destroyed by ordinary mortals, which fueled his anger.
He wanted to have a match with Sun Wukong.
Under Xu Xian's arrangement, the gibbon avoided the old mother that Guanyin Bodhisattva had transformed into and waited in this mountain range.
He wanted to prove himself superior to Sun Wukong.
The gibbon slammed the towering white jade pillar to the ground, causing the rocks to crack.
With Xu Xian's guidance, he naturally knew how to provoke Sun Wukong.
Standing atop the mountain, he laughed loudly, "Sun Wukong! Don't try to show off! This demonic wind was created by your own grandpa, the Long-Armed Ape! Back then, you wreaked havoc in the Heavenly Palace, calling yourself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, but now you've lowered yourself to be a mere disciple of a mortal monk. Aren't you even worse off than the stable boy back then?"
Upon hearing this, Wukong became enraged.
He hated the stable boy the most in his life, and would get angry with anyone who spoke ill of him.
At this moment, he drew his Ruyi Jingu Bang (Golden Cudgel), which swung in the wind and grew to the thickness of a bowl. His eyes widened in fury as he roared, "You old ape with long arms! Instead of cultivating your character, you come here to block my path and cause trouble! What kind of logic is this? I, Old Sun, am protecting my master on his journey to the West to obtain the scriptures; this is the true path of Buddhism. How dare you, you beast, spout such nonsense!"
Upon hearing this, the gibbon became even more enraged.
He already harbored resentment towards Sun Wukong for achieving enlightenment.
Now equally enraged, he pointed his staff and said, "Imperial attainment? You already have the title of Great Sage Equaling Heaven, why seek that Buddhist enlightenment! I've long heard of your seventy-two transformations and unparalleled somersault cloud, so I've come today to test your skills! If you defeat me, I'll let you and your disciples go west; if you lose, you'll relinquish the title of Great Sage Equaling Heaven to me, leave this mortal monk life, and return to Flower Fruit Mountain to be your mountain king!"
Tang Sanzang, who was listening nearby, was terrified and quickly grabbed Wukong, saying, "Wukong, don't be rash! This monkey seems to have great supernatural powers, so don't make a move rashly and ruin the harmony."
Wukong shook off Tang Sanzang's hand and laughed, "Master, don't worry! This wicked beast overestimates himself and wants to challenge me. If I don't show him who's better, he'll think I, Old Sun, am afraid of him! Watch me deal with him and then protect you on your journey west!"
After saying that, Sun Wukong leaped up and swung his golden cudgel at the long-armed ape.
The gibbon remained calm and composed, holding a bronze staff horizontally to meet the attack.
With a loud clang that shook the heavens and earth, the two monkeys displayed their unique abilities, exchanging blows with their sticks and engaging in a fierce battle.
The magical powers of Sun Wukong and the Long-Armed Ape were terrifying.
At this moment, the two divine monkeys collided, and boundless magical power naturally surged into the sky.
Both the Heavenly Court and Mount Ling felt the terrifying fluctuations at the same time.
At the South Heavenly Gate, the Heavenly King Duowen exclaimed in alarm, "Disaster! Disaster! The Great Sage Equaling Heaven is fighting with someone again! Quickly report to the Jade Emperor!"
The heavenly soldiers and generals immediately went to the Tongming Palace to report that Sun Wukong was using his magic and supernatural powers in the mortal realm, and the terrifying fluctuations reached all the way to the South Heavenly Gate.
The Jade Emperor used his all-seeing and all-hearing abilities to investigate.
The two great gods used their supernatural powers to look towards the Great Sage Equaling Heaven, observed carefully for a while, and then reported back to the Jade Emperor.
"Your Majesty, the Great Sage Equaling Heaven is actually fighting with another divine monkey."
"Based on our observations, we discovered that the two divine monkeys possessed exactly the same supernatural abilities."
"Besides the Monkey King, the other divine monkey seems to be the Long-Armed Ape."
"We consulted the Heavenly Court's register of deities and found that the divine monkey bore a striking resemblance to the great divine monkey general of the past."
"However, at this time, the Great Monkey King is already in the Western Spirit Mountain, and we cannot find him."
The Western Spirit Mountain.
The protectors of the faith and the Arhats naturally also sensed the fluctuations from afar.
They immediately contacted the guardian deities protecting Tang Sanzang and obtained firsthand information.
The one fighting Sun Wukong now is indeed the Great Monkey King, who is also a disciple of Maitreya Buddha.
Now, it's really difficult for the Western Spirit Mountain to step forward.
After all, Maitreya Buddha is the future Buddha of Buddhism, and his status is extremely transcendent.
Even the Buddha himself would not truly break ties with Maitreya Buddha.
At this moment, the gibbon said it wanted to compete with Sun Wukong, but in reality it was blocking Tang Sanzang's journey to the west.
Although Maitreya Buddha has already declared that he has expelled the Monkey King from his disciples and that Mount Ling will no longer have such a disciple.
The problem is that creatures with extraordinary abilities, like the gibbon, are definitely objects of contention among various parties.
Who would dare to truly believe that Maitreya Buddha expelled him?
After all, the Buddha Tathagata had stated unequivocally that Jin Chanzi had been banished to the mortal realm.
The results of it?
Isn't this unruly disciple in charge of the eastward transmission of Mahayana Buddhism?
It's like getting a huge opportunity out of nowhere.
At this moment, Maitreya Buddha's behavior made it impossible to discern his true thoughts.
In fact, Maitreya Buddha had indeed expelled the gibbon from his sect and severed the karmic ties between the gibbon and Buddhism.
He could easily use his great magical powers to announce this matter to the world.
But Maitreya Buddha did not do that.
Because he wanted to know how the Buddha would deal with the Long-Armed Ape, this extraordinary being who had attained sainthood.
Disregarding his feelings, they directly accepted him as a disciple?
Should we be ruthless and kill him?
Or should we just let Tang Sanzang accept him as a disciple?
No matter what the Buddha does, it will arouse the dissatisfaction of many forces.
If the Buddha messes things up, he can then hand over the reins of the Mahayana Buddhist transmission to the East to Huang Mei.
The Buddhist lineage will flourish in the future!
Maitreya Buddha smiled and said to the Buddhist disciples, "The Long-Armed Ape is no longer my disciple, nor is he a member of my Buddhist sect. You must uphold justice!"
The Bodhisattvas, Arhats, and Dharma protectors of the Western Vulture Peak felt bitter.
The leader completely absolved himself of any responsibility, leaving the immense pressure entirely on those below him who were tasked with implementing the tasks.
The Arhats and Sangha had absolutely no idea what to do.
They couldn't really deal with the gibbon, otherwise they would surely face the revenge of Maitreya Buddha.
But if we abandon it, what will happen to the eastward transmission of Mahayana Buddhism?
These two magical monkeys are incredibly powerful; if they are not careful, they could kill Tang Sanzang on the spot.
This is absolutely a headache!
The monks scratched their heads and went to search for the two Arhats, Subduing Dragon and Taming Tiger.
The Buddha's expression was neither joyful nor sorrowful. He simply said to the Dragon Subduer and the Tiger Tamer, "You may act as you see fit; there is no need for formalities."
"yes!"
The two, who subdued dragons and tigers, immediately nodded in agreement and rode on auspicious clouds to fly out of Mount Ling.
It wasn't until they were on the road that the two showed some dissatisfaction.
Jianglong gritted his teeth: "How did we run into this again? This is too troublesome! With our combined cultivation levels, how could we possibly stop those two divine monkeys from fighting?"
Fu Hu looked thoughtful: "I've long heard of the Long-Armed Ape's abilities; they are indeed comparable to the Great Sage Equaling Heaven. What should we do this time?"
Jianglong shook his head and said, "What should we do? Let's see what the Heavenly Court thinks! After all, that monkey was once the Heavenly Court's Great Monkey General."
"Why do these kinds of troublesome things always fall on our shoulders? And the South China Sea—"
"Silence!"
Fu Hu was startled and then realized that he had said the wrong thing.
He immediately shut his mouth, and followed the Arhat Subduing Dragon, riding on auspicious clouds, heading straight for the South Heavenly Gate.
When the two arrived at the South Heavenly Gate, they were surprised to find that the Heavenly King Duowen was already waiting for them.
"Greetings, Venerable Ones. Venus is already waiting for you at your residence."
Jianglong and Fuhu exchanged a glance, knowing that the Heavenly Court had also entrusted this matter to Taibai Jinxing.
They thanked Vaisravana and then followed the directions to Venus's residence.
The three looked at each other in silence, and then sighed simultaneously.
There was a sense of empathy between them.
After a long silence, Venus spoke up: "I observed the battle from heaven and found that the Long-Armed Ape's abilities were indeed no different from those of the Great Sage Equaling Heaven. The eastward transmission of Mahayana Buddhism may have to be temporarily put on hold."
The Arhats Subduing Dragon and Taming Tiger were startled and furious.
Venus, that old fellow, is truly a master of his craft.
He knew how much Western Buddhists valued the eastward transmission of Mahayana Buddhism, so he deliberately said that.
This is forcing the Western Lingshan Mountain to take action to suppress the Long-Armed Ape.
The problem is that Maitreya Buddha, a top-tier being with great supernatural powers, is also stationed at Mount Sumeru in the West.
There aren't many skilled individuals available.
All the experts qualified to subdue the Long-Armed Ape are highly skilled, and these people would naturally not participate in the confrontation between Maitreya Buddha and Tathagata Buddha.
The other Bodhisattvas and Arhats did not have the ability to subdue the gibbon.
Therefore, Jianglong and Fuhu thought of coming to the Heavenly Court for help.
However, Venus clearly didn't want to get involved in this mess either, and directly threw the question back at Venus.
The Dragon Subduer said, "The eastward transmission of Mahayana Buddhism is of paramount importance and cannot be delayed! The Buddhist sect also has its own unspeakable difficulties. We urge the Heavenly Court to intervene in this matter. The Buddhist sect will certainly not be satisfied with this."
As Jianglong Zhoufuhu spoke, an extremely dazzling swastika symbol rose from behind him.
Venus was startled and alarmed.
Because the swastika clearly contains the power fluctuations of the Buddha.
Clearly, the words spoken by the Dragon Subduer and Tiger Tamer at this moment were in accordance with the Buddha's intention.
Venus is a deity in the Heavenly Court system, and his relationship with Buddha is not significant.
At this point, however, the Buddha's swastika symbol was both a tempting offer and an extremely subtle threat.
The Heavenly Court helped Mount Ling suppress the Great Monkey King, for which Buddha was naturally extremely grateful.
The Buddha spoke nonsense about cause and effect; there will definitely be retribution in the future.
However, even if the Heavenly Court shirks its responsibility, the Western Spirit Mountain will not give up easily.
The masters of Mount Ling are no match for the high-ranking officials of the Heavenly Court, but even deities like Venus are indeed unable to contend with Mount Ling on their own.
Thinking of this, Venus finally stood up, putting on a righteous and awe-inspiring appearance, and said, "The eastward transmission of Mahayana Buddhism is indeed a great opportunity jointly promoted by the Heavenly Court and the Western Vulture Peak. We must not linger here! I will go and report to the Jade Emperor, and ask the Heavenly Court to send people to suppress the demon monkey."
"Now that this matter is settled, I thank the old immortal very much."
Venus went to the Lingxiao Palace to report to the Jade Emperor.
Even the dragon and tiger dared not wait there, so they rode auspicious clouds past the South Heavenly Gate and headed straight for the mountain ridge.
The two descended from the clouds and observed from afar.
Two golden lights rolled wildly in mid-air.
A golden cudgel, a bronze rod, that is truly:
The stick stirs up wind and clouds, startling the sun and moon; the club wields mountains and shakes the earth.
The two monkeys fought fiercely, each displaying their unique abilities to determine life and death.
Sun Wukong possessed seventy-two transformations of endless mystery, and his somersault cloud was as fast as a shooting star.
This gibbon can also move mountains and fill seas, and shrink the distance of a thousand miles.
His skills were comparable to those of the Great Sage.
The two monkeys fought for over a hundred rounds, with neither gaining the upper hand.
The fighting caused dust to billow and trees to be broken.
Tang Sanzang stood by, trembling with fear, chanting Amitabha's name, lest he harm his own life.
Enraged by the fight, Wukong roared, "You beast, you've got some skills after all! Take another hit from my staff!"
The gibbon, enraged, shouted, "Keeper of the Heavenly Horses, stop exaggerating! Today we'll settle this once and for all, and let the world know who the true Monkey King is!"
In the midst of the battle, suddenly they heard celestial music emanating from the heavens above, accompanied by the cries of phoenixes and cranes.
The Heavenly Army has arrived.
